Preheat the oven to 375u00b0F. Butter and flour two 9-inch pans.

Beat the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating to incorporate after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Add the flour in 3 parts, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with flour. Make sure each addition is incorporated before adding next. Add the salt, vanilla, baking powder, and nutmeg and mix until combined.

Divide the batter into as many bowls as you have different food colourings.

Pour 1/2 of each colour into each of the pans, 1 colour at a time. The batter will spread itself out.

Bake until a tester inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Let cool.
