   Mix shortening, sugar, molasses, flour, ginger and salt.

   Beat egg and add to mixture.

   Boil the water and add the soda.

   Then add to flour mixture.

   May add 1 cup raisins and 1/2 cup nuts to dough.

   Drop by spoon to cookie sheet.

   Bake at 350u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes.
