Basic Bread Pudding

   Scald milk and butter in top of double boiler over boiling water.

   Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes.

   Add to milk.

   Cover and remove from heat.

   Beat eggs until frothy; add sugar and salt. Stir hot milk and bread into egg mixture.

   Add nutmeg and vanilla, mixing well.

   Pour into buttered 1 1/2-quart casserole or baking dish, placed in pan of hot water.

   Bake in moderate oven at 350u00b0 about 1 hour or until a knife inserted comes out clean.
