8 slices bread
2 tablespoons butter
syrup for serving

In a shallow bowl, beat together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla and orange liqueur (if using), cinnamon and nutmeg. Dip bread slices into egg mixture, being sure to coat both sides.

In a skillet or griddle, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter over medium heat. Add half of the bread slices and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining slices. Serve warm with syrup.
