Mama'S Caramel Icing

   Cook 1/2 cup sugar in black skillet until melted and golden. Mix egg, butter and remainder of sugar with milk in a heavy boiler and cook over medium heat until butter melts.

   Add caramelized sugar.

   Cook until soft ball can be formed in cold water.

   I use a candy thermometer and cook it to 232u00b0.

   Add vanilla; beat.
