1
If you make this in a bread machine, add all of the ingredients in the machine and stop after the first rising.
-
2
If you are making this in a food processor, add in the dry ingredients first, and then the yeast.
-
3
Next add the sugar, and pour the egg-milk mixture.
-
4
Continuously run the food processor for 1.5 minutes.
-
5
If you're using a food processor, take the dough out and for the first rising, put in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap.
-
6
It will take about 45 minutes at 104F (40C).
-
7
Once the first rising is over, divide the dough into 16 portions, roll into balls and then let sit for 15 minutes.
-
8
Once it's all done, press flat with your hands and make a hole in the center.
-
9
You can also use a small cookie cutter to make the hole.
-
10
On 12 cm squares of parchment paper, put them on an oven tray and arrange as shown for the second rising.
-
11
Once again, let them sit for 45 minutes at 104F (40C).
-
12
After it has risen, fry at 350F (180C) until both sides are golden brown!
-
13
Be careful!
-
14
If the heat is too low, they will absorb the oil and become too oily.
-
15
While still hot, sprinkle some powdered sugar, or drizzle with icing or melted chocolate.
-
16
Fluffy, chewy, melt-in-your-mouth fried foods are the best.
-
17
If you chill them, all they need is 10 seconds in the microwave and they have that freshly baked taste again.

I sprinkled cherry blossom petal sugar on these.
