water

1 c. chopped onion

1 bay leaf
1/8 tsp. cayenne
2 carrots, sliced
2 ribs celery, sliced

1/4 tsp. pepper

Cover lentils and split peas with water; soak overnight. Drain.

Place lentils and split peas in large saucepan with 8 cups water, ham, onion, garlic, bay leaf and cayenne.
