2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup vegetable shortening (crisco)
¼ cup butter
½ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg yolk
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 tablespoons evaporated milk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup gumdrop, cut up fine
2 egg whites
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup coconut

Mix all the above ingredients.

Press into a 7 x 11 greased baking pan.

Press the gumdrop pieces into the dough.

beat egg whites with brown sugar to make a soft meringue.

fold in the coconut.

Spread evenly on top.

Bake 325 degrees oven F.

Bake 25 minutes.

Note: the topping is a double recipe thats the way my family like them.

You can make one egg white 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup coconut if desired.

Remove and cool on rack.
