1 tsp. soda
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
pinch of salt
1/2 c. cocoa (regular)
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour

Dissolve soda in boiling water in large bowl; add sugar, shortening, eggs, salt, cocoa, buttermilk, vanilla and flour. Mix with electric mixer at slow speed until all ingredients are moistened. Increase mixer speed until medium and beat for 2 minutes. Bake as a sheet cake in oiled, paper-lined pan at 350u00b0 for 45 minutes or until batter springs back when touched lightly in the center. Take out of oven and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes, then turn out on rack to finish cooling.
