   Mix together sugar, syrup, water and salt.

   Over medium heat, stirring constantly, bring to a boil.

   Boil gently without stirring to 265u00b0 on candy thermometer (or hard ball stage).

   Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.

   Add vanilla, beating constantly.

   Pour hot syrup in

   a fine stream over egg whites. Continue beating until mixture begins to lose its gloss.

   Stir in nuts.

   Turn into a buttered 8-inch square pan and spread evenly.
