Preheat oven to 350u00b0F. Lightly grease and line an 8 x 12-inch baking pan.

Combine the dates, water and granular sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring for 10-15 mins, until the dates have absorbed most of the liquid. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter, brown sugar and syrup or honey together, until light and fluffy. Sift the flour and soda over butter mixture. Fold in lightly. Add oats and mix well.

Press half the oat mixture into base of prepared pan. Spread date mixture over the top.

Mix walnuts through the remaining oat mixture. Sprinkle crumble evenly over date mixture and press down lightly. Bake 30-35 mins, until golden. Leave in the pan to cool completely, then transfer to a cutting board and cut into slices.
