1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 tsp. soda
3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. and 2 Tbsp. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. chocolate chips

Put dates into bowl.

Pour boiling water with one teaspoon of soda over dates.

Cream shortening; add one cup of sugar and two eggs.

Cut dates into small pieces (can purchase dates already cut into small pieces).

Mix dates in the water/soda mixture with shortening, sugar and eggs.

Add flour, cinnamon, salt and vanilla. Stir mixture together and place in a greased square pan.

Before baking, add brown sugar and chocolate chips together.
