Combine flour and salt; cut in shortening. Beat egg yolk in a measuring cup; add enough milk to make 2/3 cup liquid. Mix well; stir into the flour mixture.

On a floured surface, roll half of the dough to a 17x12-inch rectangle. Fit into and up the sides of a 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1-inch baking pan. Sprinkle the crust with cornflakes; top with the apples. Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle evenly on top of the apples.

Roll the remaining dough into a rectangle and lay over the top of the apples. Seal the edges and cut slits in the top of the crust. Beat the egg white until frothy; brush on the crust.

Bake at 375 degrees for50 minutes.

Once out of the oven, mix the powdered sugar and milk and drizzle the frosting over the bars.
