In a cup: Mix 1/2 cup cocoa plus enough warm water to make a paste. 1 tsp. baking soda 3 tsp. melted fat 2 tsp. cream of tarter (in it's place can substitute 2 tsp. Bakewell cream or 3 tsp. baking powder About 5 c. non-rising flour

Mix salt, sugar, and eggs; add vanilla, cocoa paste, sour milk, and baking soda. Melted fat and cream of tarter together well. Add flour, one cup at a time; mix well. Roll the dough about 1/4 inch thick onto lightly floured board. Cut into donuts; fry into hot fat for 3 to 4 minutes. Let cool slightly on paper towel. Place a little sugar (about 1/4 cup) into lunch bag. Add about 2 or 3 donuts; shake to coat with sugar.
