Preheat oven to 350 F.

Coarsely chop 8 squares (1 package) of chocolate, set aside. Microwave the remaining 8 squares in a large microwaveable bowl on high for 2 minutes. Stir with a wooden spoon until chocolate is completely melted. Add sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla; stir until well blended. Add flour and baking powder, mix well. Stir in chopped chocolate and walnuts. (If not using nuts, increase flour to 3/4 cup to help cookies keep their shape in the oven.) Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.

Bake for 12 to 13 minutes or until cookies are puffed and feel set to the touch. Cool for 1 minute, then remove from the baking sheets. Cool completely on wire racks.
