Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. While oven is preheating, add the 3 tablespoons butter to an iron skillet and place in the oven.

Measure out the flour and sift in the baking powder, salt, and the buttermilk powder. Cut in the cold shortening. I use my hands and rub it into the flour because that's how Grandma Bonnie did it. I swear it tastes better, too. Add the milk and stir with a wooden spoon just until combined. Turn out onto a floured cutting board and roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut biscuits shapes out.

Put the biscuits into the prepared pan, but as you put them in, turn them once to coat the tops with the browned butter. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

Works great for sausage gravy!

If you are in a hurry, you can add a bit more milk to make the dough soft enough to make drop biscuits.
