   Trim layer of sponge cake or layer cake 1-inch bigger on all sides than a brick of ice cream.

   Place on a wooden cutting board. Make meringue:

   Gradually add sugar to stiffly beaten egg whites and beat until meringue forms peaks.

   Place brick of ice cream on cake.

   Strip of paper under cake will help slide dessert onto plate.

   Spread meringue over ice cream and cake.

   Seal carefully to edges of cake.

   Bake in very hot oven, 450u00b0, until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

   To serve, slice from board to plate. Serve quickly.
