6 cups beef broth
½ cup red wine
4 tablespoons cognac
1 bay leaf

Saute onions in oil with garlic and salt til onions are golden, 5 minute.

Reduce heat and continue cooking til onions are soft, 20 minutes.

Reduce heat and simmer 30 minute uncovered.
