In a large bowl, mix the flour and butter by hand until crumbly. Add the sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix again. Add raisins, still mixing by hand. Add beaten egg and work the dough into a ball.

Turn onto a floured surface and roll to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter and place discs on a cookie sheet. (Cut all discs before starting to fry.) Heat a griddle, iron skillet, or electric skillet to medium-low heat and coat with 2 or 3 tablespoons butter until melted. Add discs and fry until lightly browned, about 4-5 minutes. Turn and brown lightly on the other side. Do not overcook! Remove to a cooling rack. Store in an airtight container.
