In a black cast iron pot, heat butter over medium-high heat.", "2. Add the onion to the pot; stir to evenly coat with butter.", "3. Reduce the heat to over medium-low heat.", "4. Saute, stirring occasionally, until onion is tender and translucent.", "5. Wash the Navy beans by covering with cold water and remove any that float.", "6. Put the washed beans and ham hock in the black cast iron pot and add enough water to make 6 cups.", "7. Add spices and bring to a boil.
