In medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; set aside.

In large bowl, with electric mixer, beat Imperial Spread, 1/2 cup granulated sugar and confectioners sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla until blended. Gradually beat in flour mixture until blended. Cover with plastic wrap and chill until firm, several hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 375u00b0. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, then roll in remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar; arrange on baking sheets, about 2 inches apart. Flatten each with the bottom of a glass.

Bake 8 minutes or until centers are set. On wire rack, let stand 2 minutes; remove from sheets and cool completely.
