Cream shortening, butter, sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips.

Add dry ingredients/chocolate chip mixture to the shortening/butter mixture. Stir together till incorporated. Add 1 cup of nuts if desired.

I have found that chilling the dough in the freezer for up to an hour (and in between scooping on cookie sheet) helps stop spread of the cookie.

Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

For an even softer cookie, use 3 1/2 cups of flour.

This recipe actually makes about 90+ cookies depending on the size of the spoon you use. I use a small cookie scoop, and always get perfect-sized cookies!
