   Cream sugar and butter.

   Add flour, baking powder, salt, vanilla and egg yolks.

   Pack this crumbly mixture into a buttered 9 x 12-inch pan.

   Beat the egg whites until fluffy, then beat in the brown sugar.

   Stir in nuts or chocolate chips.

   Spread this topping on top of the first mixture; place the pan into a moderate oven for about 30 to 35 minutes.

   When cool, cut into bars.
