Mix together hot water, sugar, salt and shortening. Cool until lukewarm. Sprinkle or crumble yeast into the warm water and stir until dissolved and then add to the first mixture. Add the egg and 1/2 the flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl and turn to grease the top of the dough. Cover tight with foil or waxed paper. Store in the fridge until needed or until it has doubled in bulk. Punch down dough and cut off what is needed and shape into rolls. Let rise in a cool place 1 hour. Bake at 350u00b0 for 15 to 20 minutes or until brown. Keep in the fridge. Makes 4 to 5 dozen.
