Preheat the oven to 350F; grease a 9-inch square cake pan.

In a bowl, pour the boiling water over the dates; add the soda and let stand while the remaining ingredients are prepared.

Cream together the sugar and butter in a large bowl; add the eggs and vanilla; stir in the coconut, flour, baking powder and salt.

Pour in the date mixture and blend well.

Pour the batter into the cake pan; bake for 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean; cool before icing.

Combine all the ingredients for the icing; bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes.

While the icing is still warm, pour over the cooled cake; sprinkle with coconut.
