Preheat oven to 375u00b0F. Grease and line a 4 x 8 inch loaf pan with parchment paper, extending at the 2 long sides for handles. Sift the flours, baking soda and ginger into a large bowl. Add the sugar and pecans and stir to combine.

Whisk the eggs, buttermilk and oil in a separate bowl. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined (don't overmix).

Peel, core and finely chop one of the pears and gently stir into the batter. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan. Cut the remaining pears into quarters and remove the core. Cut each quarter into 3 slices. Top the batter with the pear slices. Bake, covering with foil halfway through cooking, for 1 hour 15 mins or until a skewer inserted at the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 5 mins, then transfer to a wire rack. Brush the warm loaf with the warm marmalade. Cut into slices. Serve with butter.
