In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Set aside.

With a mixer, combine softened butter, 1 cup of sugar and egg until creamy. Add molasses and mix until combined. Mix in flour, 1/2 cup at a time on low speed until well combined. Dough will be thick. Cover and chill dough in refrigerator for 1 hour.

Once dough has been chilled, preheat oven to 375u00b0F. Divide dough and roll into 24 quarter-sized balls.

Place remaining 1/2 cup sugar on flat surface and roll each ball in it until coated with sugar. Place onto greased baking sheet.

Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges start to set and tops start to crack. Cookies will still be a little gooey inside. Cool on wire racks and enjoy!
