   In large mixing bowl, cut dates.

   Add baking soda and boiling water.

   In large bowl, cream butter and sugar.

   Add vanilla and egg until smooth.

   Add date mixture.

   Combine well; add nuts.

   Pour into 9 x 5-inch loaf pan, greased well.

   Bake at 375u00b0 for 1 hour or until cake tester comes out clean.
