   Cut the stem off the artichoke and remove the small, tough leaves at the base.

   Slice an inch off the top of the artichoke and, if you like, trim the tips of the leaves with kitchen shears (if you've got 'em).

   Place the artichoke in a large microwave-safe bowl, base down, and add about 1/2 inch of water to the bowl.

   Cover it and microwave for 6 to 8 minutes.

   Let it stand for 1 to 2 minutes before uncovering.

   The leaves should detach easily from the artichoke.

   Drain the water and allow it to cool slightly.

   Serve your steamed 'choke with salsa.
