Mix eggs, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and whole milk. On stove, caramelize some sugar. Put flan mixture in that pot over the sugar. Place in bano de Maria (one pot inside another with water boiling in the bigger pot) just until center of flan is jiggly (about 40 minutes in big pot). (If baking in a bano de Maria in the oven, cook at 325 for about 1 hour or just until flan is slightly jiggly in center and knife comes out nearly clean.) Let flan cool down at room temperature for a while. Chill flan in refrigerator completely before trying to take it out of the pot. Flan can be chilled up to 2 days before serving. Before turning flan onto serving platter, loosen edges with knife and dip bottom of dish briefly in hot water.
