Preheat oven to 350. Grease 2 9-inch round cake pans. Line bottoms with waxed paper, grease paper. Dust pans with flour.

In bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. In large bowl with mixer at low speed, beat butter and sugars until well blended. Increase speed to high and beat 5 minutes or until pale and fluffy. Reduce speed to medium low and add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla until well blended. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Beat just until batter is smooth, occasionally scraping bowl with spatula.

Spoon batter evenly in prepared pans and bake about 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes before removing from the pans.
