Preheat oven to 350u00b0. Cream together sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Stir in the remaining ingredients until well combined. Spread into a well-greased glass baking dish (9x7x2). Batter will be really thick. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes. Let cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.

*Variation: Spread half the batter in the pan then top with pieces of your favorite chocolate/caramel/peanut butter/toffee candy and cover with the remaining batter. Of course, you'll need to cook it a wee bit longer and the resulting brownie will be so gooey it's best served in a bowl. But it's ding dang delicious!
