In a large mixing bowl combine the flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder and salt.

Add the milk, egg, and oil and stir together just enough to moisten dry ingredients.

Add the cherries and stir together. Spoon the batter into muffin cups, about 1/2 full each.

Spoon a layer of the cream cheese mixture over the batter in each cup. Add spoonfuls of batter on top of the cream cheese layer until 2/3 or more full.

Bake at 350u00b0 for 30 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes.
