Butter the sides of a heavy 1-1/2 quart saucepan.

In Saucepan combine brown sugar, margarine or butter, and corn syrup.

Cook and stir over medium heat to boiling.

Clip candy thermometer to side of pan.

Cook and stir over medium heat to 255F (hard-ball stage), approximately 4 minutes.

Remove saucepan from heat.

Stir in baking soda and vanilla; pour over popcorn.

Bake in a 300F oven for 15 minutes; stir.
