1 1/2 c. sugar
2 c. unbleached white flour
1 tsp baking pwdr, preferably Rumford's
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp grnd cloves
1/2 tsp grnd nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 c. water
1 c. black walnuts
4 x egg whites (room temperature)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Butter and lightly flour two 8 inch round cake pans.

Cream butter, then gradually add in sugar and mix well.

Sift together flour, baking pwdr, spices and salt.

Add in flour mix and water to creamed mix; beat together well.
