2 quarts. water
1/2 c. barley
1 onion, sliced thin
2 carrots, scraped & sliced
2 stalks celery, sliced
1 turnip, peeled & cut into chunks
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 sprig fresh dill weed
1 sprig fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dry basil
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Boil water, covering beans and soak 1 hour.

Pour off water and add in 2 qts fresh water.

Add in remaining ingredients.

Cover and cook over low heat for 3 hrs or possibly till beans are tender.
