Baked Beans

   Parboil beans with pinch of soda.

   Let boil for 2 to 3 minutes.

   Drain and put on fresh water; boil for 1/2 hour.

   Put 1/2 cup sugar in a heavy frypan and melt.

   Do not burn.

   Add water and stir until thoroughly dissolved.

   This will crystalize, but keep stirring until dissolved.

   Put beans in casserole.

   Add sugar mixture, salt, pepper and 2 tablespoons bacon grease.

    Put pieces of salt pork around edge and 1 whole apple and 1 whole onion in center.
