Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place prunes in pot with 1/4 cup water. Cook until prunes are soft but not mushy. Drain water and slightly mash the prunes into small chunks.

Place all ingredients including prunes in a mixing bowl and beat until ingredients are combined. Pour batter into an ungreased 9-by-13-inch pan.

Bake for about 40 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Remove cake from oven and, with the tines of a fork, poke holes in the cake.

For the cake sauce, combine butter, sugar, buttermilk and vanilla and bring to a boil. Remove from heat; add the baking soda and stir. At this point you may add the nuts (optional).

Pour the sauce over the cake (you can make some holes with a fork first). Let cake sit and cool before cutting.
