1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
2 dried red chiles
1/4 cup red lentils, rinsed
6 cups water

Simmer the soup over moderately low heat until the lentils have fallen apart, about 45 minutes.
