1 c. sugar

4 tsp. baking soda
2/3 c. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
5 1/4 c. sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
3/4 tsp. salt

Mix molasses with sugar and shortening.

Mix and sift flour, cream of tartar, spices and salt. Dissolve soda in boiling water and add to molasses mixture.
