Ingredients: 1 cup vinegar; 2 teaspoons sugar; 2 bay leaves; 5 -6 peppercorns; 6 -8 cloves garlic; ¼ teaspoon allspice; ¼ cup flour; 1 -2 lb beef chuck roast; ¾ tablespoon shortening; ⅛ teaspoon salt

Heat shortening in heavy kettle or skillet.

Add beef, cook until lightly browned on all sides.

Turning, place rack under beef, add 1/2 cup of reserved liquid.

Cover, cook over low heat for 3 hours or until tender.
