Preheat oven to 350u00b0F. Grease a deep 8 inch cake pan and line base and sides with parchment paper.

Combine poppy seeds and milk in a small bowl. Let stand for 20 mins.

Beat butter, orange zest and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Stir in flour, ground almonds, orange juice and poppy seed mixture. Transfer to prepared pan and bake for 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 5 mins then transfer to a wire rack set over a rimmed baking tray.

Meanwhile, to make the orange syrup, stir sugar, orange juice and 1/3 cup water over low heat, without boiling, until sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer, without stirring, for 2 mins. Pour hot syrup over hot cake.
