Bring a deep pot that you've filled with water to a boil (make sure there is enough room in the pot to fit the can(s) into it. I use my large canner pot so I can cover the tin cans with about 3 inches of water. It works great!
2
Once boiling, carefully immerse the can(s) of unopened sweetened condensed milk into it. Cover the pot and slowly boil/simmer for 2 to 3 hours making sure that the pan does not boil dry.
3
Carefully remove the tin(s) from the water and allow them to cool completely before opening. Inside you will find the soft toffee filling.

* A note of caution: It is absolutely vital to top off the pan of boiling water frequently during the cooking of the cans. 2 to 3 hours is a long time and if they are allowed to boil dry the cans will explode causing a grave risk to life, limb and kitchen ceilings.

I typically do 3 or 4 cans in a large pot at one time. Unopened they will stay on the pantry shelf for up to one year.
