In a mixer, beat 1/2 cup butter, vanilla, sugar, eggs, flour, cocoa powder and 2/3 cup water until combined. Increase speed to medium and beat for 3 mins, or until smooth and pale. Transfer to prepared pan and bake for 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan for 5 mins then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Meanwhile, to make the chocolate icing, melt chocolate and remaining butter over a double boiler. Gradually stir in powdered sugar and 2 tbsp hot water, stirring until icing is spreadable.

Spread icing over cold cake. Serve.
