In a large bowl, cream sugar and 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. In another bowl, whisk together flour and soda. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture, ending with the flour mixture. Stir in candy mixture and vanilla until well blended.

Bake at 325u00b0F for about 60 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in cake comes out dry.
