Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add caraway seeds and currants; stir to coat them.

Pour in about 1-3/4 c of the buttermilk and stir to mix well. The dough should be rather sticky. If the dough seems dry, add the remaining buttermilk and stir to mix.

On lightly floured board, shape dough into a rough ball and cut in half. Cover each half with just enough flour to make the surface no longer sticky, and knead each half about 10 times.

Shape each half into a 6-inch round, slightly mounded in center. With a sharp knife or razor blade, make a large cross about 1-1/2 inches deep on the top of each loaf.

Place the loaves on an ungreased baking sheet with about 4 inches between them.

Bake in 400-degree oven for about 40 minutes or until pale gold and the crust feels firm. The loaves should sound hollow when thumped. Let cool about an hour before slicing.
