Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Butter a 9 1/2 by 5 1/2 by 3/4 inch loaf pan. Line bottom with waxed paper. Butter the waxed paper and sprinkle with flour. Shake out excess flour.

In a mixing bowl combine dates, and raisins. Dissolve baking soda in water and pour over date mixture. In another bowl, cream together sugar and butter. Beat in vanilla and egg. Add flour and mix well. Add date mixture, including liquid and add pecans.

Pour mixture into prepared pan and smooth over top.

Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until top is dark brown and a toothpick inserted in center comes clean. Let cool about 5 minutes, unmold into a rack, remove paper.
