Grease a 9-cup pudding bowl, suitable for steaming; line the bottom with parchment paper.

Stir the sifted dry ingredients and almonds into the fruit mixture.

Spoon the mixture into the pudding bowl. Cover with greased foil, then secure with a lid or kitchen string. Place the steamer in a large saucepan with enough boiling water to come halfway up the side of the steamer. Simmer, covered, for about 6 hours, replenishing the water as necessary to maintain the water level.
