1 ½ cups sugar
2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
⅔ cup buttermilk
¼ cup butter, melted
2 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted
¼ cup light cream
2 cups sifted icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Generously grease 2 9 inch round layer pans.

Combine chocolate and hot water in the top of a double boiler and heat until chocolate melts.

Add 1/2 cup sugar and cook 2 minutes.

Allow to cool slightly.

Sift flour with baking soda and salt.

Sift 2 more times.

Cream butter with remaining sugar until light and fluffy.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition.

Stir in vanilla, then add flour alternately with buttermilk, beating well.

Pour batter into pans and bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
