Preheat oven to 350 F.

In a large bowl add the 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour along with the 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir to combine and set aside.

In a medium bowl combine the 2 beaten eggs, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon soda, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 2 teaspoons almond extract and set aside.

In a large skillet or sauce pan over medium heat, add 1 stick butter, 1 cup Dr. Pepper, 1/2 cup cocoa powder and 1/2 cup vegetable oil. Bring to a boil and whisk, stirring constantly until all ingredients are dissolved and well mixed. Add the flour/sugar mixture and beat well. Remove pan from heat. Add the buttermilk/egg mixture and stir until well blended.

Pour batter into a greased/floured 10x15 sheet cake pan. Place pan in a preheated 350 F oven. Bake cake for 25-30 minutes.

While cake is baking, start the frosting by melting 1 stick butter in a medium sized sauce pan over low heat. Add the 6 Tablespoons cream and 1/2 cup cocoa. Whisk over low heat until cocoa powder is well dissolved and mixed with the butter and cream. Remove pan from heat and add 1 pound of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 2 teaspoons amond extract. Use a mixer to beat icing until it is smooth and creamy. Add 1-2 tablespoons of extra cream if needed. Add nuts if desired.

Spread frosting over cake as soon as it comes out of the oven. Allow cake to cool before cutting.

This recipe is a variation of my Coca Cola Cake recipe, made with Dr. Pepper instead of Coke. I've also added almond extract and extra buttermilk.
